9 mini landscape paintings project, number 5

Yesterday I used some of the extra paint on my palette to tone the rest of my papers for this project. I had been doing a very light wash, but for these I did a mid-value color in a variety of hues. Today’s was a dull orange color (similar to burnt sienna) so I decided to try out an analogous color scheme built around yellow-green. I selected another photo from a photo hike I took last March near Durham, in the late afternoon with an overcast sky. This was a peaceful corner of a field, and I liked the color…

9 mini landscape paintings project, number 4

I’ve been learning about analogous color schemes along with tonalism, and for this mini landscape painting I chose a photo I took on a local trail last March. The trees were mostly bare, and there was a hint of grass in an otherwise largely monochromatic scene. So I thought it would be a good time to try practicing an analogous scheme. My concept was based on a peaceful path winding through a tangle of winter woods, with some small trees that have a lyrical movement to them. It’s a combination of O and S compositional armatures. Since this particular landscape…

9 mini landscape paintings project, number 3

I built on the second painting from my 9 mini landscape paintings project for this one, continuing to take things one step at a time and not feel a rush to complete any part of it. I’m going for a good balance of giving each step the time needed for consideration without getting bogged down by over-analyzing it. So far I’m pretty happy with how that’s going! My concept for this one was based on the warmth of the light being cast by the evening sun contrasted with the dark cloud coming into the sky and that little cluster of…

9 mini landscape paintings project, number 2

In the brief span of time between mini landscape painting number 1 and number 2, I reignited my interest in the tonalist style. I had wandered into it awhile back and then got seduced by the vibrant colors available to painters. The bright, saturated colors that many people use in their paintings is undoubtedly magnetic! But I typically find myself coming back to the neutrals — something tonalism celebrates and which feels like a more natural state for me. One of the ways I explored tonalism with this mini painting was to use a limited palette inspired by a painting…

9 mini landscape paintings project

I’m excited to be working on a new painting project. This one is based on doing 9 mini landscape paintings, and the goal of it is to knock off the rust that’s built up over several months of no painting. It’s pretty amazing how many tasks I found to do to avoid actually putting paint on the brush, lol. But one of the things I wanted to revisit and refamiliarize myself with is my painting process — from choosing a subject to completing a painting — before jumping in. (Or at least completing up to the point of varnishing, since…
