30 Days of Value Thumbnails – Day 14

Mini color study, “Warming Up”, 3×4 oil on paper

I thought this would be an interesting exploration of color temperature — warm orange against cool blue — but it turned out to be an exercise in complete frustration, lol. I didn’t have a clear color mixing strategy and ended up fussing around and dulling everything down for…what felt like 8 hours. I made a strip of test paper with my four target values in grey paint (the darkest being Gamblin’s Portland Grey Deep). But then did a poor job of actually matching the values to it, so that didn’t help me much.

Really I think the main issue was that this was just not a good reference photo to work from, and it threw me all off. But it was a good reminder of the importance of simultaneous contrast — a good topic for me to be working on!
