30 Days of Value Thumbnails – Day 8

mini painting color study of Schwabachers Landing in Grand Tetons May 6 2019
Mini color study, 3×4 oil on paper

You can’t tell from this mini color study, but that light colored patch is a pile of logs. Schwabacher Landing in the Grand Tetons National Park is a home to beavers that build dams along the stream, which we didn’t see but we saw the evidence of them!

This photo was really challenging to paint from because there’s so little value contrast in it. I tried forcing it with my value thumbnail, but it’s a little hard to read in the color study. I like the shapes and composition though so perhaps with some more experimenting this would be improved.

The underpainting color on this one was a light wash of Winsor Lemon and alizarin permanent.
