Mini color study, 3×4 oil on paper |
This was another photo I took on our hike along Cheek Rd. Trail in Durham, and I liked the large foreground field with layers that go back into the distance. My focal point is the barn in the distance.
To bring a bit of the sky colors into the land, I added touches of darker blue and pink to the grasses. They’re very subtle in the sky, and I didn’t want to add colors that light to the ground plane, so I took the same hues and made them darker without introducing so much contrast.

Black and white value check of my study |
I’ve been really happy with how the value structure of my color studies are turning out lately! The paper was toned with a light wash of ultramarine violet. I thought it would play well with the overcast sky. Once again, it’s mostly covered up though, lol.
